Imphal: Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh has announced to reward Tapon village of Kangpokpi district for voluntarily destroying poppy plantation at the village.

“Villagers of Tapon, under Kangpokpi district have voluntarily destroyed the poppy plantations in their surrounding areas. For their sincere effort and contribution, the state government will reward the village a sum of Rs 5 Lakh,” Biren said as he posts on his Facebook wall.

On February 8, the chief minister handed over a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh to Peh (Paoyi) village authority for voluntarily destroying poppy plants grown in their village as part of the state government’s ‘war on drugs’ campaign.

He had said the government was ready to provide assistance to villagers as an alternative to poppy plantation.
