Panchayat members lock DC office over pending honorarium, caution to intensify agitation

Imphal: Pressing the Manipur government to clear pending honorarium for Panchayat functionaries and MGNREGS job card holders and to issue second installment of 15th Finance Commission award Panchayat members on Saturday locked the offices at deputy commissioner (DC), Imphal East and staged sit-in in front of the DC office complex.

The agitation was spearheaded by Manipur State Panchayat Parisad, Porompat. The Panchayat members launched the sit-in rally on Thursday.

Moirang Kunou Gram Panchayat Pradhan Laishram Dhanashore told reporters that they will start locking of government offices and intensify agitation with imposition of bandhs and blockades if the demands are not fulfilled by April 20.

In the first week of September last year, central government sanctioned appropriate funds under MGNREGS. However, Manipur government has failed to issue the sanction funds for the job card holders for 16 months, Dhanashore said.

“Our demands include issuance of second installment of 15th Finance Commission award and to sanction the honorarium of Panchayat functionaries from the month of October, 2019 to March 2021,” he added.

Written letters were submitted to the authority concerned. Manipur State Panchayat Parisad, had cautioned the government to issue the pending amounts by Monday, Dhaneshore said.
The villagers have started to support the agitation, he added.

He said state government should be aware that a government needs people’s supports starting from the grassroot level. “We will start locking the various government departments,” he added.
