4 arrested in connection with destruction of bridge at Koubru, destruction of chowkidar quarter arrested

Imphal: Manipur Police arrested two suspects in connection with the demolition of a concrete bridge constructed along the way to Mt. Koubru, Kangpokpi and another two in connection with burning down of chowkidar quarters of the Sanamahi Laishang located at Jangmol village near Koubru Leikha.

“Trust the present government, avoid creating communalism, will not spare any wrong doers,” chief minister N. Biren posted on his Facebook wall highlighting the latest development.

The two suspects arrested in connection with the demolition of the bridge were identified as Tonggoulen Kipgen, 24, son of Thangjang Kipgen of Saijang village and Paokai Boulsom, 29, son of late Thangpu Boulsom of Ichaigojang village both from Kangpokpi district.

They have been produced before the court of JMIC-Kangpokpi and remanded to 4 days police custody, the senior police officer said.

Police received a report on April 14 at about 8.30 pm that A Songpijang- Manhjol bridge leading to Mt. Koubru under the jurisdiction of Gamnom Sapormeina police station, Kangpokpi district had been damaged by unknown miscreants in the intervening night of April 13 and 14, he said.
In connection to the report a suo-moto case was registered for investigation. During the course of investigation the two suspects were picked up during the intervening night of April 16 and 17. Investigation of the case is still continuing and those who were involved in the case will be arrested soon, he added.

Police have made a road diversion for pilgrims and department concerned has also completed a diversion bridge where light vehicles can pass on, the officer said.

Police base camp had been deputed at A Songpijang but as the bridge is located at an isolated place police was not able to intervene during the time of incidence.

The two suspects arrested in connection chowkidar quarters of the Sanamahi Laishang were identified as as Seiminlen Kipgen, 32, and Seitinsat Kipgen, 31, both son of late Otkhothang Kipgen of Jangmol village.

On April 15 police received a report that the chowkidar quarters of the Sanamahi Laishang located at Jangmol village near Koubru Laikha, under Kangpokpi Police station, Kangpokpi district had been partially burnt by some unknown miscreants on April 14 at about 8:30 pm thereby causing damage to properties worth approximately Rs 1,300 inside the quarter. Hence a suo moto case has been registered, Angam said.

During the course of the investigation, the two suspect persons were arrested and produced before the court of JMIC-Kangpokpi and remanded to police custody for four days with effect from April 17. Investigation of the case is in progress, he added.

It was learnt that the incident occurred due to land dispute among the two brothers, he said.

These two incidences of demolishing bridge and burning of chowkidar quarters are not related, he added.

For the pilgrims, precautionary measures have been taken by police department and for the safety of the pilgrims, adequate police personnel are also deputed at Lai pukhri located at Mt. Koubru, the officer said.
