‘No fertilizer shortage for Kharif crop season’

Imphal: Manipur will not face shortage of fertilizers in pre-kharif and kharif crops for the season, farmers could produce more of agricultural products as the fertilizers will be made available abundantly in time unless national highways are not disturbed.

Agriculture minister O. Lukhoi said this during a press conference held the office chamber of director of agriculture at Sanjenthong, Imphal East on Sunday.

In the past years some misunderstanding occurred among the farmers and agriculture department over unavailability of fertilizers in time. For the current season the department has already taken precautionary measures, Lukhoi said.

Namrup fertilizer factory has approved a total of 5,24,790 fertilizer bags, which is to send to Manipur through the two national highways after unloading at Jiribam train station, he added.

For pre-kharif crops, two racks, each containing 58,310 fertilizer bags has already arrived at Jiribam. Out of the two racks, one rack has already delivered to state farmers.

“When the remaining one rack of fertilizers was about to deliver at the godown, the incident of firing at some goods trucks occurred. Hence, the fertilizers were kept at Jiribam train station,” the minister said.

Loading of the fertilizer at Jiribam has started on Sunday and within 1-2 days the fertilizers will arrive at Imphal, he said.

As there is less demand for fertilizers for pre-kharif crops, the department brings in only two racks. To avoid misunderstanding among farmers and agriculture department for the kharif crops, the department will start bringing in 4,08,170 bags of fertilizers.
