Man arrested for posting misleading Covid vaccination video

Imphal: Imphal West police has arrested a man for trying to mislead people on Covid vaccination by uploading a video clip in social media.

The arrested person was Haobam Tikendrajit alias Ibomcha, 40, son of late H. Chaoba Singh of Uchiwa Leirak Achouba under Mayang Imphal police station.

Superintendent of police, Imphal West in a press note said a complaint was received from state mission director, NHM, Dr N. Shamjai on Saturday.

It said that on Friday one unknown person was vaccinated with Covisheild at a vaccination centre and he took a video clip from his mobile phone secretly with intention to spread false information and mislead the general public in order to obstruct the public servants from performing their lawful duties.

Tikendrajit posted the video clip in the social media with a message that the vaccine was not injected and as such it was widely circulated in social media including WhatsApp and facebook. It made the general public to believe that the medical staffs in the vaccination centre were not injecting the vaccine, it added.

Due to the viral video post the medical staffs received false charges of manipulation and wrongful deeds and they also received intimidation from many people.

It said that the effort of the government in the curving of the Covid-19 pandemic has been severely affected as the vaccination at any centres reduced considerably as many people lost faith in the vaccination. The act of Tikendrait severely affected the ongoing vaccination programme and demoralised the frontline workers, it added.

Meghachandra appealed to the people not to spread false information in the various measures taken up by the government to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, not to believe on false and misleading information without proper verification.

The arrested person was handed over to Mayang Imphal police station.
