‘Raj medicity fails to adopt government’s rate for Covid patient treatment’

Imphal: Raj Medicity has failed to follow government’s order regarding treatment of Covid-19 patients, says Manipur Students’ Federation (MSF).

The students federation urged state government to take necessary action against Raj Medicity hospital for violating the government’s order regarding hospital charges for Covid-19 patients in private hospitals.

One 75 years woman from Imphal West was admitted at Raj Medicity hospital, North AOC, Imphal on May 25. As she was tested positive, she was admitted at intensive care unit of the hospital on the same day at about 5.17 pm. She was succumbed to Covid on Saturday.

For the last 5 days treatment in the hospital, the authority asked to pay for Rs. 2,71,560 as hospital charge so that the family member can take the body of the deceased.

In the government order issued on May 26 mentioned that with a view to ensure that reasonable rates are charged by private hospitals for Covid-19 treatment, maximum charge per day in private hospital should be for general ward or isolation ward, a patient with and without oxygen support should be Rs 5,000 and Rs 3,000 respectively. Patient admitted in high dependency unit should be not more than Rs 7,000; ICU with and without ventilator use should be Rs 10,000 and Rs 8,000 respectively.

The order also mentioned that the per day charge will includes registration charge, bed charge, nursing and boarding charge, medicine and drugs, oxygen charges and pathology and radiology test charge.

The order mentioned that high end medicine can be charged separately including cost of PPE.

Grandson of he deceased said the patient was admitted on May 25 and government issued the order on the next day. He said the family members feels little secure regarding financial matters after the government order issued the next day. When he enquired the matter with the hospital, he was told that the hospital will not follow the state government’s order.

He enquired to the hospital for utilising the health card during the treatment but he was told that the health card could not be benefited in the matter. There are many people who may not afford the hospital charge, the authority concerned need to look inti the matter, he added.

General secretary, MSF, Hijam Roshan told in a video clip that due to large hospital bills, Covid-19 positive patients started opting for death instead of getting treatment at private hospitals. He said many Covid patients are giving treatment at Raj Medicity hospital but the hospital is charging huge amount of money against the state government’s rates.

He urged the authority concerned and chief minister N. Biren Singh to immediately deal the matter.
