RIMS doctors ‘successfully’ conduct Black Fungus surgery

Imphal: A team of ENT surgeons of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal comprising of prof. Th. Sudhiranjan, Dr O. Priyokumar and Dr N. Jiten Singh successfully conducted surgery for Mucormycosis (Black Fungus) involving the nose and paranasal sinuses in a post Covid-19 patient.

The patient is undergoing treatment for Covid-19 infection at RIMS Hospital under prof. Ch Dhanaraj. The Anaesthetist team was led by prof. L. Pradip and Dr Eshori Longjam.

During the surgery, mucormycosis was found to involve the right maxillary sinus, ethmoid sinuses, middle and inferior turbinates, posterior part of the nasal septurn. Sphenoid sinus was found to be oedematous but clear of gross disease. The lamina papyracea (thin wall separating orbit and nasal cavity) and floor of the brain was found to be intact. All parts involved by the mucormycosis were cleared of the disease.

The patient is stable after the surgery, a press release by RIMS said on Friday.
