Manipur Police cautions against cyber fraud, one Facebook hacker arrested

Imphal: Manipur Police has cautioned people to protect from Cyber fraud who uses duplicate fake Facebook accounts and misusing it.

Public relation officer K. Meghachandra in a press note said a new type of scam/fraud is reported widely whereby cyber criminals create duplicate fake Facebook accounts of individuals using the same profile name and picture.

These cyber criminals collect the relevant public information like profile name, photos and other details from the victim’s legitimate profile and create a similar looking account on social media, ithe press release by the senior police officer said.

It said using these fake accounts cyber criminals start sending friend request to the friends of victims and ask for financial help citing some emergency. Those who are unaware of this foul play are trapped into this kind of fraud activity and send money to the cyber fraudsters, he added.

To avoid from this mischievous act and as safety measures an individual may lock their Facebook account so that cyber-criminals, who are not their Facebook’s friends and the fraudster will not be able to steal their public information and create duplicate Facebook account, Meghachandra said.

Always verify a Friend request received on Facebook and do not send money to your contact requesting money over Facebook messenger. Always check the authenticity of the message or call to verify before paying, he added.

These cyber criminals mostly use Hindi or English, with wrong spelling and grammar, while communicating or messaging through Facebook. They will not respond in Meiteilon or local languages, he said.

One arrested for hacking Facebook account

Cyber Crime Police station/ CID (crime branch) arrested one person in connection with a FIR which relates to a complaint made by a lady reporting regarding her hacking of facebook account.

The person identified as one Heisnam James Singh, 30, son fo Heisnam Kumar Singh of Lamboi Khongnangkhong, Imphal West was arrested on Monday.

He was arrested in connection to a FIR which is related to a complaint made by a lady reporting that one unknown Face account having profile name “Foiz Ahmed” with profile url link https://www. facebook. com/foiz.ahmed.3958 had uploaded her photo on the fake Facebook account on June 11 without her consent. The same person also uploaded objectionable photo on the facebook account on June 18.

The police team seized one mobile handset along with a SIM card from his possession.
