Man arrested for collecting money in connection with CM’s Covid-19 Affected Livelihood Support Scheme

Imphal: Thoubal Police of Manipur has arrested a person who has been ‘illegally’ collecting money from the innocent people on the pretext of providing benefit under the Chief Minister’s Covid-19 Affected Livelihood Support Scheme.

The person was identified as Moirangthem Jelen Singh, Khangabok Part -I.

He has been alleged of collecting money at the rate of Rs 300-400 per applicant.

Social Welfare department had issued notification on July 28 inviting applications from certain category of households of an amount of Rs 5,000 per household under the livelihood scheme. The scheme aims to provide direct cash transfer the sum in two equal installments of Rs. 2500 to every identified family whose livelihood has been directly affected by Covid-19 related restrictions.

The department came across a notification, dated August 3, issued by the Manipur Silang Loumi Lup, Irawat Bhawan Complex, Imphal, affiliated to Bharatiya Khet Mazadoor Union Federation thereby alleging that Moirangthem Jelen Singh has been illegally collecting money from the innocent people on the pretext of providing benefit under the scheme. This was informed to police by social welfare director Ngangom Uttam.

A case was registered at the concerned police station for investigation.

Jelen was arrested on Wednesday. He will be produced before Manipur High Court on Thursday for further necessary action, police said.
