‘Farmers fail to get fertilizer as most are tenants’

Imphal: As most of the farmers of Manipur are tenant farmers they frequently face problems in getting the fertilizers issued by the state government, co-opted member, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee, Achoibam Deben said.

These farmers fail to produce proper documents of the paddy fields, Deben said while distributing old aged and widow pension to the people of Challou, Lamlai, Napet and Pungdongbam on Wednesday.

Deben has been distributing monthly pension to the people of the said area in remembrance of his late mother, Achoibam ongbi Ibemhal Devi.

The state government says farmers are mandatory to produce proper identification documents and for the paddy lands that they are cultivating, he added.

To avoid the issue state government should take necessary steps so that farmers could easily get the fertilizers at government subsidised rate from time to time. If the government fails to take necessary step most of the farmers will face severe issues amid the pandemic, he said.

During the programme a total of about 420 persons including old aged and widows were distributed monthly pensions from his own expenses. A sum of Rs 200 and Rs 400 each to old aged and widows were distributed respectively.
