Imphal: Tension erupted at Chandel bazar between police personnel and Naga people for snatching Naga flag while celebrating 75th Naga’s Independence day celebration.
The Naga Independence Day was ‘celebrated across the Naga inhabited areas’.
United Naga Council (UNC) has imposed total shutdown in all Naga areas for 24 hours with effect from August 14 midnight decrying against the state government’s order for ‘deliberately’ imposing to all the village chief or headman or chairman to collect the Indian national flag and to hoist to celebrate 75th India’s independence day on August 15 in all villages.
UNC in a press said the notification was made by chief secretary of Manipur on August 7 which mentioned that the village headman or chief or chairman should collect the India’s National flag from their concern SDOs and to hoist and celebrate the 75th India’s Independence day on August 15 in their respective villages.
India is a democratic country and the Naga people had never opposed the celebration of the Indian Independence day, it said.
It is unprecedented that the state government and district administrations resorting to such a cheap tactic to further supress the political aspiration of Naga people and decades long struggle for achieving enduring peace in the region, UNC said.
It said the Naga people vehemently condemn the recent provocative action of state security forces in dishonouring the sanctity of Naga national flag and the people of Chandel district in particular.
The ransacking if Naga People Organisation (NPO), office Senapati and Senapati District Student’s Association (SDSA) office and snatching away of Naga flag by the Assam Rifles is tantamount to insulting the Naga people, it added.
The district apex organisation, women, students and Tribe Hoho are directed to strictly enforce the total shutdown in their respective jurisdiction. Anyone defying the shutdown will be at his or her own risk,” it said.
UNC appealed the general public and the Nagas in particular to extend cooperation in 24 hours total shutdown.
It cautioned that chief secretary should retract the aforementioned order at the earliest, falling which UNC will take its own course of action.
It was reported that Chandel district police took down all the Naga national flag led by a team of officer-in-charge, Chandel police station.
Tension erupted between the Naga people and police personnel. The protestor burnt down a police booth and to control the mob police fired several rounds of tear gas shell towards the protestor.
Some of the representatives of the students’ union met DC, Chandel and resolved to return the flag. The Naga flag was returned to the students’ union in presence of superintendent of police, Chandel district.
