Imphal: Khoupum battalion of Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR(South) foiled a smuggling attempt of Areca nuts worth Rs 74 lakhs near Khongbung village in Noney district on Saturday.
Based on specific input regarding smuggling of Areca nuts, the troops of Assam Rifles intercepted two trucks carrying Areca nuts on road Khongbung-Gaidimjang.
After thorough search of the vehicles, 445 bags of Areca nuts worth Rs 74 lakh recovered.
The apprehended individuals and recovered items were handed over to Noney police for further legal action, the Assam Rifles said on Monday.
