Imphal: Admission at higher secondary schools especially in government schools in Imphal has become an issue in Manipur following cent percent pass in the Matric exam result.
In wake of the Covid-19 crisis the Board of Education Manipur could not conduct the 2021 High School Leaving Certificate Examination, 2021 and declared all the candidates passed on July 30.
The government school authorities face troubles in accommodating the students who approach for admission.
Vice-principal of CC Higher Secondary school, L. Reema Devi said the school admission for Class XI began on August 20. The admission is done as per the instruction of Education (S) department. Students in large number rush to study in our school. The school authority is very sad for many students left the campus without getting admission, she added
She said in the science stream the intake was 300 students, in Arts it was 150 and in Commerce it was 50. As per the instruction of the government the intake capacity has increased to 400, 200 and 100 in Science, Arts and Commerce streams respectively for our school.
“We managed the admission on the spot on the first come first serve basis. The admission is over and we have no vacancy in the school now. We cannot take all the students with the available infrastructures and rooms. We increased the seat capacity as the government assured to provide all the requirements. We affirm to take care for the students’ welfare and hope that education (S) will look after the school.
The marking modalities were framed after minute discussion and consultation with the resource persons and education experts. The result was prepared on the basis of 20 marks from class X internal assessment conducted by the schools concerned, 30 marks from class IX exam and 50 from class X pre-board exams.
The result was declared based on assessment reports submitted by schools. A total of 47,208 students were registered for the exam – 20,416 boys and 19,438 girls.
Since the examination was cancelled, the board released an assessment criteria based on which students have been marked. According to the criteria, the students were marked on their performances in Class 9 and 10. Their performances gave 30 per cent weightage to class 9 final results; 50 per cent to class 10 pre boards and the remaining 20 per cent to the internal assessments.
Thoudam Priya, a resident of Pangei who came for her daughter’s admission at TG Higher Secondary school said the percentage for the admission in the school is 80 percent and her daughter’s percentage is 73 percent. “As we have no sound earning opportunity we come here to get admission in this government school,” she added.
All Manipur Students’ Union and other student bodies urges the government for an amicable solution to the admission issue.
AMSU president H. Chalamba Meitei said the major problem that comes up is that the passed out student is about 47 thousand and in addition with CBSE student the number of student seeking admission turn out to be large. The state being a poor state and parents having no earning opportunity in the present situation, majority of the student, who cannot bear high costs in private schools, look for government schools, he added.
It is learnt that about 50 thousand students approached to enrole in government schools. About 15 thousand students seek for admission in one of the schools in Imphal. The government has declared cent percent pass. But it appears that the government has not taken up proper arrangement to accommodate the students for further studies, the student leader said.
The student leader suggested the government to extend the school buildings, recruit teachers and takes ups classes on shifts for a solution to the issue.
