Brown Sugar factory at cop’s residence busted in Manipur, Rs 90 crore worth drug seized

Imphal:  A combined team of Manipur Police has busted a Brown Sugar manufacturing laboratory which was running at the residence of a state policeman at Yairipok Tulihal Awang Leikai, Imphal East.

The policeman, Md. Mujibur Rahman, 42, years son of late Md. Fazal Karim, was serving as head constable at Tamenglong district.

Mujibur’s residence was raided at about 1:30 am by a combined team of Narcotic Cell, Imphal East, a commando team of Thoubal Police, a team of Andro Police and a team of Imphal East Police commando in presence of Executive Magistrate of Imphal East Ningthoujam Ratankumar Singh, SDC/Branch Officer, DC, Imphal East and the volunteers of Youth Athletic Development Association of Kshetrigao.

The police action was taken up under the supervision of superintendent of police N. Herojit and under the command of Porompat Police SDPO N.Suraj Singh.

Opium of 430 kg contained in 11 bags and refined Brown Sugar of 40 kg contained in three bags were recovered, Herojit told reporters, here.

The team also recovered items used in manufacturing the drug such as 2 kg of Ammonium Chloride white in colour and 250 litres of liquid for refining Brown Sugar among others.

It seized one police ID-card, one black Nokia phone and one silver colour Bolero jeep bearing registration number MNO7D-3311. The vehicle bore a sticker marked as NHIDCL On Govt. Duty.

The drugs are estimated to be around Rs 90 crore in the international market value.

Mujibur was arrested. He disclosed the police that one Md. Hero of Thoubal Moijing is the distributor of the refined Brown Sugar and another Md. Firoj, 19, son of Md. Oli of Yairipok Tulihal Toubokpi is the transporter of the raw materials and Mujibur Rahman is the manufacturer.

Firoj was then arrested from his residence along with one MI Smart Phone light blue in colour at about 2:30 am.

The arrested persons along with the seized articles are being handed over to Andro Police station for taking up necessary legal action against them, the senior police officer said.

“It is beyond expectation that a Brown Sugar factory would run in a densely populated residential area. Seizing the drugs before marketing them and busting of the racket is a big success for the district police, its supporters and people organisations,” Herojit said.

The arrest of the policeman will be informed to Tamenglong district police where he was posted to take up developmental action, he added.
