Biren greets people on Vegetarian Day

Imphal: Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh has conveyed his ‘warm greetings and best wishes’ to the people of Manipur, especially to jain brethren on the occasion of Anant Chaturdashi, which is observed as Vegetarian Day.

Ahimsa was one of the most important teachings of Lord Mahavir, the founder of jainism who had a firm belief that no harm shall be caused to any living creature. As such, his followers are one of the greatest advocates of vegetarianism, Biren said.

Vegetarianism is the practice of living solely upon vegetables, free from all forms of meat, generally for ethical, ascetic, or nutritional reasons. Although diet is a personal choice born out of customs, personal taste and habit, vegetarian diets are amongst the healthiest diets for physical, mental and spiritual development. In today’s progressive society, many people are giving up meat and fish in pursuit of following a plant and dairy based diet, he added.
