NIA to investigate Athuan Abonmai murder case


Imphal: Ministry of home affairs on Thursday directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take up the case of Athuan Abonmai murder by ‘suspected NSCN (1-M) members’.

Chief minister N. Biren Singh on Thursday said the state government had written the Centre twice urging to handover the murder case to NIA.

The ministry order said the central government has received the information regarding registration of an FIR on September 22 at Lamphel Police station, Imphal West, Manipur under sections 365, 400 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code, relating to kidnapping/abduction of Athuan Abonmei, by cadres of NSCN (I-M) on September 22 at 11.30 am from Tarnenglong Head Quarter Polo ground Subsequently, on the same day, the case was transferred to Tamengiorg Police station as the place of occurrence was under its jurisdiction and section 302 and 307 of Indian Penal Coda nave been added in the instant case as Athuan Abonmai was found dead in Pallong Village.

Section 16/17 and 20 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 are also added in the case, the accused persons and their associates being members of terrorist gang and are raising funds for terror activities disturbing the peace and tranquillity of the state, it added.

“Initial inquiry revealed that the accused persons involved in the case are suspected members of NSCN (I-M).” Sections 16, 17 and 20 of UA(P) Act, 1967 have also been added In the instant case, the order said.

It said the central government is of the opinion that a Scheduled Offence under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, has been committee and having regard to the gravity of the offence and to unearth the full conspiracy hatched by the accused, It is required to be Investigated by the National Investigation Agency In accordance with the National investigation Agency Act, 2008.

In exercise of the powers conferred under sub-section (4) of Section 6 read with Section 8 of the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008 the central government directed the National Investigation Agency to take up investigation of the case.
