Imphal: Congress demonstrators took out a protest rally in the heart of Imphal city condemning the recent killing of eight farmers in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri incidence and ‘illegal’ arrest of Priyanka Gandhi, which confronted the police.
The protest rally was led by AICC in-charge Bhakta Charan Das, ex-MP, AICC Senior Observer Jairam Ramesh, MP, MPCC president N. Loken and its working president K. Meghachandra and Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress and NSUI Manipur.
It blocked the Imphal city on BT road. The street was the schedule route for the movement of the Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu who visited the state on this day.
State police personnel intercepted the protesters in front of the western gate of the Kangla Fort.
The protestors shouted slogans “Congress Party Jindabad”, “Farmer killer BJP”, “Down down BJP”. They continued shouting slogans when the police told them to avoid the road.
Taffic movement was disrupted for nearly half an hour during the protest. The police, however, prevented them from further proceeding of the protest on the road.
The demonstrators demanded unconditional release of AICC general secretary and in-charge of UP Priyanka Gandhi who was detained by UP police and immediate arrest of the accused involved in the incidence of UP’s Lakhimpur Kheri.
Bhakta Charan Das said the Congress party demands immediate arrest of the accused, who is a son of a Union minister and condemn the BJP government in UP for not taking up action against the perpetrators.
The Congress party demanded the Prime Minister to apologize to farmers and immediately solve the farmer problem during his Lucknow visit, he added stating that
the entire country is protesting against the BJP led UP government failure.
