Imphal: Congress party strongly protests against the illegal detention of Priyanka Gandhi at Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh for more than 48 hours since 4:30 am on Monday without being served with any order or notice or FIR under BJP’s regime in the state.
This was stated by Manipur PCC spokesperson N. Bupenda during a press briefing at Imphal Congress Bhavan on Wednesday.
What has happened at Lakhimpur Kheri of Uttar Pradesh, chronologically, took place after the recent statement of Haryana’s BJP chief minister against the protesting farmers, the spokesperson said.
“The silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in Lucknow for Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, has deliberately remained a stoic silence towards the victim families of Lakhimpur Kheri. The Prime Minister should reply whether freedom (Azadi) of farmers of Lakhimpur Kheri has no constitutional protection in our nation when farmers gave freedom to us,” he said.
MPCC demands a Supreme Court monitored probe – a probe by a sitting Supreme Court judge, but not by a retired judge – against the killing of farmers at Lakhimpur Kheri.
Why was Priyanka Gandhi detained illegally at Sitapur, where there was no Section 144 of CrPC when she was detained? Why was Priyanka Gandhi, a woman, kept and detained illegally before the sunrise by 4:30 AM at night at Sitapur, and why is she not yet produced in any nearest magistrate even after 48 hours of illegal detention? Why is Priyanka Gandhi not allowed to meet his legal counsel, as enshrined in the Constitution as a fundamental right under its Article 22, at Sitapur? Why is Priyanka Gandhi, the citizen of this country, not allowed to enjoy Right to Freedom, a fundamental right, under Article 19 (1)(b) at Sitapur? Manipur PCC asked.
It demands the government of India and Uttar Pradesh government not to destroy the fundamental right under Article 21 of Priyanka Gandhi at Sitapur.
Why is the internet being shut down at Sitapur? Where is the official order of Uttar Pradesh administration to notify a PAC compound, where Priyanka Gandhi is detained illegally, as a temporary prison? How can Section 151 of IPC being imposed against Priyanka Gandhi who was travelling, exercising her fundamental right under Article 19(1)(d) to move freely, at Sitapur where there was no notification of the imposition of Section 144 of CrPC? Why is the son of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs not being arrested till now while Priyanka Gandhi has been kept illegally for more than 48 hours?” Bupenda said.
Since the post mortem of the deceased farmers was not done properly, there is a demand for 2nd time post mortem at Lakhimpur Kheri. The killing of farmers at Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh and the silence of BJP governments, both under Prime Minister Modi and UP Chief Minister Yogi, are the true reflection of highest level of arrogance of BJP and its idea against the farmers and the people of our country, he added.
BJP government, under Prime Minister Modi, has been, systematically, trying to destroy the Land Acquisition Law and making serious attempts to bring the anti-farmers three farm bills. What BJP does in the centre or Lucknow, the same attitude is being imbibed and executed by the same idea of BJP in Manipur too by imposing illegal restrictions against peaceful democratic protests in Imphal, he said.
Like BJP leaders, even from other states, came to visit Lakhimpur Kheri, but Congress leaders – including chief minister of Chhattishgarh and deputy chief ministers of Punjab and Rajasthan – are not allowed to enter Uttar Pradesh or even come out of Lucknow airport, the BJP government in Manipur has not allowed Congress leaders to hold a democratic protest in support of farmers at Lakhimpur Kheri. The BJP Manipur government forcibly and illegally halted the peaceful democratic protest held yesterday in Imphal by senior Congress leaders, AICC senior observer and MP Jairam Ramesh and AICC in-charge and ex-MP Bhakta Charan Das and MPCC president with MLAs and ex-MLAs, he told reporters.
Today, Rahul Gandhi is going to Lucknow, but heard that Uttar Pradesh government has not given its permission. This is a sign of complete undeclared emergency in the state, Bupenda said.
The complete lawlessness in Uttar Pradesh, where fundamental rights have been violated by the state government under the silent spectator of the central government, befits the imposition of President’s Rule in the state, he added.
