Imphal: Residence of Langol National Games Village Zone-III area in Imphal West area protested against Manipur government’s alleged move to construct buildings at the area.
A sit-in protest was staged at the playground site on Friday, participated by volunteers of United Committee Manipur, Meitei Langol Unit; United Club of Langol; and women.
President of Meetei Langol UCM unit, Haobijam Shamu Singh said people denounce the government’s step to bring in various projects at this playground which have been preserved since the past. No construction of the building should take up here.”
With the utilization of open spaces with building constructions playgrounds have been diminished. There is no ground that can serve as a children’s park, morning walk spot, community recreation centre, etc. “We would welcome if the government takes up projects for the improvement of the playground,” Shamu said. People denounce the introduction of different projects at free spaces against the preservation of grounds, he added.
He warned that various forms of people’s agitations will be launched if the government fails to listen to the voice of the people.
Chief minister Nongthombam Biren Singh on February 11 said construction of buildings at playgrounds in localities has limited the availability of open spaces to children. Activities like filling up ponds, construction works at playgrounds, felling of trees in a large number has resulted in ecological imbalance and climate change which has become more evident recently.
