Imphal: Mapithel Dam Affected Headmen, Chiefs and Elders Organisation (MDAHCEO) has urged Manipur government to immediately dismantle the dam to bring normalcy to the villagers inhabited at its surroundings.
MDAHCEO and Joint Action Committee Against Force Construction of Mapithel Dam (JAC-AFCMD), Manipur on Monday organised a sit-in at Lamlai Khunou village, Kamjong district protesting against the failure on implementation of 19 points memorandum of agreement signed with the state government on December 4 last year.
Protestor staged with placards “no to dam without solution”, “we want justice”, “release water” and others.
Chairman of MDAHCEO M Ngaranmi said the JAC imposed a 48-hour bandh along Imphal-Kamjong and Imphal-Ukhrul roads since October 6.
Various agitation had been conducted demanding for implementation of 19 points of the memorandum, however, no response has been made from the government till date, he added.
He said as per the agreement the state government had not approved economic livelihood rehabilitation package for 7 villages till date which is Rs 3 lakh per beneficiary or family and another 14 village are also yet to be approved.
In the memorandum it is mentioned that Rs 1.5 lakh shall be paid to the affected families before December 31, 2020 from the state budget and another Rs 1.5 shall be paid after getting the amount released from either DoNER ministry or ministry of water resources probably during this year.
The agreement also mentioned that verification of affected families of R.R.package were already conducted by concerned DC and department and the compensation shall be paid as per existing norms applicable to the villages with respect to the year when compensation will be actually disbursed to the submerge villages.
An ultimatum had also been served to the state government on September 16 however no response has been made from the government. The government should dismantle the dam immediately if they fail to implement the agreement in time, Ngaranmi said.
MDAHCEO and JAC-AFCMD will intensify agitation if the government fails to fulfil the demands in time, he added.
