Imphal: Security forces in Manipur on Thursday recovered two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) fitted in coconut shells from the foothill of Thumbi Ching, Nongpok Sanjenbam in Imphal East district.
The explosive devices were recovered following arrest of one active cadre of proscribed PREPAK (Progressive) on Thursday.
The arrested militant was identified as Nongthombam Abung Meitei Nongdamba, 20, son of N. Nandakurnar Meetei of Nongpok Sanjenbam Khullen, Imphal East district.
Abung was nabbed by a combined team of Imphal East Police commando and 15 Assam Rifles from the northern side of Koirengei Bridge at 3:35 pm during a mobile frisking, checking and search operation in the different areas Mantripukhri-Koirengei area along the NH-39 road.
He disclosed that he came to Mantripukhri-Koirengei area looking for a place to plant an IED to attack the security forces particularly India Army, superintendent of police N. Herojit Meetei told reporters on Friday.
On further examination it was learnt that the arrestee kept conceal two IEDs’ at the foothill of Thumbi Ching, Nongpok Sanjenbam which he brought from Moreh (Indo-Myanmar border town in Manipur) in the month of October, 2021, handed over to him by one Ango of the outfit and instructed Abung to plant the IED at Mantripukhri area along the NH-39 road to attack the security forces, Herojit said.
Immediately, a combined team of Imphal East Police commando and a column of 15 AR along with the arrestee rushed to the foothill and on the pointing of the arrestee recovered two RDX cakes, each weighing 150 gm approximately, two RC receiver (circuit board), two electric detonator (no.33), two 9 volt battery and one remote control device and seized at 5:10 pm at the spot, the senior police officer added.
The police also seized a mobile phone and a wallet.
The superintendent of police appeals the public to inform police if any suspicious objects are detected. He suggested to give the information to Imphal East Police control room 2452669 or to his personal mobile number 9436038404 or to additional superintendent of police, Imphal East 8131915684.
He said the operation is one of the big achievements of district police.
The arrested person along with seized items were handed over to Heingang Police station for further necessary legal action.
