Need to replace imported Phabou for Ngari production: MFFU


Imphal: Necessary steps to stop importing of Phabou Nga (Puntius Sophore) need to be taken up by replacing with locally found Puntius Sophore for improvement of Manipur economy, chairman of Manipur Fisheries Foundation Union (MFFU), Moirangthem Tombi Singh said on Sunday.

He was speaking during a press conference held at Babupara, here.

About 3/4 of the state population consum Ngari (fermented fished made from Puntius Sophore) in local cuisine. Almost all the ‘Phabou Nga’ are imported in the state by non-ngari eaters. Necessary steps need to be taken to replace the imported fish variety by the locally found Phabou Nga so that the economy of the state would be improved, he said.

He said the union appreciates chief minister N. Biren Singh for announcing to convert state revenue department into state resource department. He said the unutilised land for in hills and valleys should be utilised by imposing certain taxes.

MFFU has started land survey to utilize for fish farming in various areas of the state, Tombi said.
