Imphal: The 18 hours total shut down demanding to enlist Meitei/Meetei in the schedule tribe list has been preponed to launch at Monday midnight.
Schedule Tribe Demand Committee convenor Laishram Romesh Meitei told reporters on Monday that the committee decided to prepone the total shut down as ‘Meira Paibi Numit’ falls on Tuesday and as per request from various civil society organisations and Meira Paibi the total shut down was preponed.
He said the committee had been demanding to enlist Meitei/Meeitei in schedule tribe list since 2012 which the respective state government of Manipur including the present government has been neglecting to send recommendation to the central government.
The committee had submitted a reminder to chief minister N. Biren Singh by keeping a deadline to send the recommendation till 3 pm of December 27. However the state government has failed to give any positive response and due to the reason the committee decided to call the 18 hours total shut down across the state, Romesh said.
In continuation of the demand the committee appealed to the women market vendors to conduct cease work strike on Tuesday from 12.30 pm to 1 pm. On the next day the committee will storm at the chief minister’s bungalow to press for the demands, he added.
He said if the movements founds to be ineffective necessary intensive agitation will be launched on January 2-3 next year, however the mode of agitation will be decided on December 30.
The present government has been shouting that the government is citizen centric government but it gives priority to get political mileage instead of converting the demands into action, he added.
Romesh said the social movement will be continuing till the demands are fulfilled even if the election code of conduct is announced.
The total shutdown violators will be taken as anti-social because the demand of is legitimate for the welfare of the people.bDuring the total shut down essential service, electricity, water and media shall be exempted, he added.
