Imphal: Cadres of United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF) that is under suspension of operation (SoO) have allegedly assaulted two workers of National People’s Party (NPP) candidate of Chandel Assembly Constituency and threatened him to withdraw from contesting in the upcoming Manipur Assembly election.
NPP candidate of Chandel assembly constituency Lunkhopao Haokip alias Apao told reporters here on Tuesday that the incident was occurred on Saturday near K Savumpa village, Chandel district which falls under the jurisdiction of Molcham Police station.
The injured workers are namely chief of Chakhap village, Chandel, Jamshei Haokip and chief of Khengjoi village, Chandel, Thokhathang Haokip.
He said during the incident the alleged UKLF cadres had physically assaulted the two workers and the vehicle which they came bearing registration number NL01H 8291 was also damaged. Their mobile phones were also confiscated.
Apao said as per order issued by superintendent of police, CID (crime branch) on November 29 last year mentioned that in view of the coming State Assembly Election, 2022 the cadres of SoO groups are concentrated at their designated camps and not to leave their respective designated camps under any circumstances.
The order also requested that all the SoO groups/ cadres should be kept away from any issue related to the upcoming elections, he added.
He said in connection with the incident an FIR was lodged at Molcham police station but till date no arrest has been made.Instead, the alleged UKLF cadres are roaming freely supporting the BJP candidate of the Constituency, SS Olish.
Meanwhile, on January 26, one civil society organisation Kuki Chiefs’ Association issued a declaration stating that “On January 12, all the Civil Society Organisation (CSO), Chandel under the aegis of Kuki Chief Association, Chandel district, Manipur had unanimously resolved to support SS Olish ( intending BJP candidate) for the ensuing 12th Legislative Assembly Election in Chandel (ST), A/C at Nazareth Community hall, Sugnu, Chandel district, Manipur”.
It said any individual or party going against this agreement and pledge of the apex body of the Kuki Tribes of Chandel district will not be tolerated. The consequences whatsoever arising out the same will be boycotted and ex-communicated from the Kuki society of Chandel district.
Apao said, “This is an infringement of our fundamental right and violation of human rights. So the Kuki Chief Association (KCA), Chandel is no longer a civil organisation but an unlawful group or party.”
Apao said another complaint was also lodged at Election Commission of India (ECI through Chief Electoral Officer, Imphal however no action has been taken yet.
He appealed to the authority concerned to take necessary measures in relation with the incident.
