Cough syrup worth over Rs 20 lakh seized in Imphal

Imphal: A combined team of Imphal West district police commando and Narcotics Cell, Imphal West seized 5,880 bottles of Phensegrip Cough Syrup and arrested one person on Tuesday.
The arrested person has been identified as one Oinam Ratan, 36, son of late Oinam Jugin of Kwakeithel Moirang Purel, Imphal West district.
Superintendent of police, Imphal West, Ksh. Shivananda told reporters here that based on a reliable information that some unknown persons are transporting contraband items at Tera Khuraijam area.
Acting on the information the combined team rushed to the said area and raided at the residence of one Longjam Premjit alias Goroba Meitei, 36, son of late L. Herojit Meitei of Tera Khuraijam Leirak, Imphal West.
The unknown person was found inside the house and detained him for spot verification.
While searching the house the combined team found 49 carton boxes containing the cough syrup composing 10 mg of codeine.
Ratan revealed that the carton boxes belong to him. He further revealed that the said carton boxes was to be delivered to Lilong area.
The entire carton boxes was opened in presence of civil witness and found that each carton box contained 120 bottles of the cough syrup.
The entire carton boxes including the cough syrup was seized for further investigation, the officer said.
The police team is taking up investigation to find out the kingpin of the consignment, Shivakanta, said.
Police reported that The MRP of each bottle cost Rs 186.65 however, it is sold at around Rs 300 per bottle at black market.
