Peace rally against poll violence


Imphal: Decrying against election related violence occurred at Singjamei Constituency and to bring peace in the constituency people of the constituency marched a peace rally on Friday.

The rally set of from Singjamei parking and after crossing Singjamei market, Singjamei traffic point after continuing the rally along NH 2 towards Yumnam Leikai traffic point the rally returned towards Singjamei Chingamakha and ended at Ibudhou Luwangpokpa Model Club ground.

Laishram ongbi Bimola Devi, a demonstrator, said ahead of the Phase-I election conducted on February 28, frequent poll violence was occurred in Singjamei Assembly Constituency.

Most of the people of the constituency faced frequent threat from some of the workers irrespective of political parties. The rally was being marched not to repeat such type of violence, she added.

The demonstrators alleged that most of the workers of BJP candidate Yumnam Khemchand assaulted some of the workers of rival candidates even on the day of poll conducted on February 28.

She alleged that workers of BJP candidate physically assaulted one of the women at 13/9 polling station of the constituency.

She appealed the people not to encourage poll violence ‘as it will not bring any benefit but can only increase enmity among the people’.
