One lady cop injured, vehicles damaged in mob attack at police station in Manipur


Imphal: One woman cop was injured and some vehicles were damaged in a mob attack launched at Porompat Police station against arrest of 17 persons in connection with post poll violence between workers of NPP and BJP that occurred on the next day  Manipur election result which was declared on March 10.

According to state police on March 11 there was an incident wherein it was alleged that the NPP workers, while carrying out a victory procession at Khergao Sabal leikai in Imphal East, they brandished guns and deadly weapons in the locality. Due to which a violent fight broke out between the NPP workers and BJP workers causing injury and destruction of properties in the locality.

District police rushed to the spot at Khergao Sabal Leikai and brought the situation under control. In connection with the incident, two cases were registered.

In connection with the cases, a search operation was conducted at Khergao Sabal Leikai and Kshetrigao area to arrest the persons involved in the incident by a team of the district police where one accused person was picked up on Saturday.

On Monday morning, in continuation of the search operation, a team of the district police conducted a search operation at Kshetrigao Area. On receiving of information from a reliable source about the locations of the persons involved in the above cases, the police team made a hot pursuit of the accused persons involved in the incident. In the operation, 16 persons were picked up and brought at Porompat PS for investigation.

In the afternoon there was a huge mob gathered at Porompat Police station in protest against the arrest of accused and suspected persons. The mob became unruly and violent, attacking at the police station and police personnel, storming the police station gate and pelting stones at the police station despite hectic persuasion by the police personnel deployed at the main gate. The police personnel resort to use minimum force to disperse the mob and to bring it under control.

In the mob violence, the women head constable Kangujrn Promila of Imphal East Police sustained injury and some vehicles were damaged. A case was registered in connection with the storming at the police station by the mob.
