NPP workers released, 2 BJP workers remanded to police custody


Imphal: Supporters of National People’s party (NPP) who were detained and arrested under two different FIRs registered at Porompat Police station on the charge of public assault has been released on bail.

General strike imposed by All Manipur Muslim Students’ Organisation was withdrawn immediately.

In connection with two different FIRs registered at Porompat police station arrested altogether 13 persons, of which eight were NPP workers and five were BJP workers.

Decrying against picked up of NPP workers huge mob gather in front of Porompat police station. Confrontation took place between the mob and police personnel and during the incident 19 persons including 13 women were detained at the same police station on Monday.

AMMSO imposed general strike against the arrest of NPP workers since early morning of Tuesday. The general strike affected Hatta, Thoubal, Khergao areas and others.

Protestors at Hatta blocked road in the early morning. Imphal East district police while trying to control the protestor and clear the blocked road fired tear gas and mock bomb. Later the police was successful in controlling the protestors and clear the road.

The 13 arrested persons were produced in front of concerned district magistrate and eight NPP workers along with three BJP workers were released on bail. However two BJP workers were remanded to police custody till March 17.

The 19 detainees were also released from Porompat police station.
