Bunglong, Khousabung pineapple farmers urge government to increase infrastructures

Imphal: Bunglong and Khousabung pineapple farmers have urged the state government and authority concerned to provide the facility of cold storage with good connectivity and others infrastructures to promote farmers.

On the last day of a two-day media workshop on ‘Role of Media in Organic Farming in Manipur’ an interaction programme was conducted with media personnel and pineapple farmers of Khousabung and Bunglon village, Churachandpur district on Monday.

Niki, a pineapple farmer of Bunglong told reporters during the interaction programme that to produce organic pineapple Manipur Organic Mission Manipur (MOMA) have been assisting the farmers since 2018. Farmers can earn more income the assistance is increased.

Farmers started producing pineapple since 2000. They cannot produce abundant pineapple. However with the emergence of MOMA in the village farmers started producing more pineapples, she said.

Earlier farmers faced one of the most severe issues of marketing. At present MOMA bought their farm products and the issue of marketing is little better. Most of the issues of selling pineapple has been solved under MOMA but the farmers need more assistance in order to produce pure organic pineapple, she added.

Technical officer of Clover Organic private limited, Jenny Momin told that earlier there were least number of pineapple farmers however. At present the pineapple farmers has reached 3,000 which are 2,000 farmers in Pherzwal and 1,000 farmers at Churachandpur district. She said Clover Organic Private limited with the support of MOMA, around 10 metric tons of pineapple had been exported to other parts of the country.

Under Clover with the support of MOMA, each pineapple farmers are advised to plant one hectare each and the farmers are advised not to use chemical fertilizers. The uniqueness of pineapple of Khousabung and Bunglong is its juicyness as compare with the pineapples available in other parts of the state, she said.
