MP Rajya Sabha Leishemba places issue of ‘ST demand’ on the floor

Imphal: Rajya MP Leishemba Sanajaoba placed on the parliamentary floor to include Meitei/ Meeitei under schedule tribe list under article 342 (1) of the Indian Constitution on Tuesday as ‘Special Mention’ of the ongoing Parliament session.

Leishemba, who is also the titular king of Manipur, informed the House that since 2013 series of demands have been made by different local bodies of Manipur to include Meitei/Meeitei under schedule tribe list.

In connection with the demand various memorandums have been submitted to the then Prime Minister, home minister including the present Prime Minister, Union home minister and Union minister of tribal affairs and others leaders. However, no necessary action had been taken from the concerned regarding the long-term demand for the people of Manipur.

Leishembam said Meitei/ Meeitei will become a minority community if the central government and authority concerned fails to fulfil the demand at the earliest.

People of Manipur have been living with a pride for the last 5,000 years however at the present scenario there is possibility of becoming like refugees in its own land, he said and appealed the House to give instruction to the state government to rake necessary actions in order to save indigenous people of Manipur at the earliest, he said.

The same issue was to be brought during the recent monsoon Parliamentary session, 2021, however, he failed to table the issue as the Parliamentary session was shortened, he added.

During his tenure as MP Rajya Sabha, Leishemba Sanajaoba had placed many issues to bring welfare and development for Manipur.

Some of the issues are to include Manipuri local dialect (Meiteilon) to classical language status; to include Meeitei/ Meitei Mayek (local dialect script) in Indian currency note; upgradation of Kangla into world heritage site. Centra gave positive response regarding some of the issues that Leishemba had proposed.
