Biren instructs for intensive ‘War on Drugs’


Imphal: Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh on Tuesday said to strengthen ‘War on Drugs’ the government has given instructions to allow all the police personnel including IRB and Manipur Rifles for frisking and checking.

The state narcotic cell and people should cooperate with the government, Biren said.

He was speaking on the sideline of the election of Chairman, Hill Area Committee (HAC) at Manipur Legislative Assembly campus, Chingmeirong, Imphal.

Biren said it is compulsory for those who are arrested in drug related case to be put behind bars for at least 1-2 years.

He appealed the special court to speed up the proceedings for drug related cases.

Biren had said the government will not spare any individual related with drug cases.

As the present government started taking initiatives in connection with ‘War on Drugs’ frequently and due to the reason seizing and arresting of number of drugs and peddlers are increasing, he said.

Responding to reporters, Biren said,  there is no paediatrics hospital in the state, no cancer hospital and some patients are preferring to undergo treatment outside the state due to lack of facility in the state. The government will take necessary steps and decide whether to engage the contractual staff recruited during the pandemic, he added.
