Two street vendors injured in police confrontation


Imphal: Two street vendors were injured when they confronted police who were dispersing the street vendors at Khwairamband Ima Keithel on Wednesday.

The street vendors forcibly vend at the surroundings of Khwairamband Ima market after the members of the  Roadside vendors Welfare Association Street vendors of Khwairamband Ima Market failed to meet caretaker of IMC.

Tension erupted among the street vendors and police personnel leading to injury of the two street vendors.

To press for implementation of ‘the street vendors Act, 2014’,

Khwairamband Ima Keithel street vendors went to meet caretaker of Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC), L. Lokeshwor, but failed.

Publicity secretary of the association, G. Lembisana said they were demanding to withdraw the restriction to vend in and around Khwairamband Ima market after 8 am.

Police and IMC staff dispersed the street vendors after 8 am. On the other hand, many non-locals are still vending at roadside. “Why are the non-locals not dispersed?” She asked.

She said the street vendors are daily bread earners and with the business, they are running their family. The alternative market place that the government allotted at Lamphel is not a business area. Since years the street vendors have been demanding to implement ‘the street vendors Act, 2014’, she added.

“We will not retreat our movement until the demands are met,” she said.
