Ring road must not affect historic Ipum Pat: JAC


Imphal: Joint action committee (JAC), formed against the construction of Ring Road connecting Ipum Mapal Road Khurai Konsam Leikai, Imphal East, has demanded Manipur government to divert the path of ring road to save the historic ‘Ipum Pat’ (lake) and for the welfare of the people living at the surroundings.

In connection with the demand to divert the path of Ring road from Khurai Konsam leikai, a one-day public meeting regarding construction of Imphal Ring road at Ipum mapal connecting road was organised at community hall of Khurai Konsam leikai on Friday.

Ngangkham Naobi, one of the JAC member told reporters that the people welcome construction of ring road, however, if the road affects the historic Ipum Pat, the locals inhabited at the surroundings of Ipum Pat will launch intensive agitation.

“The JAC will never compromise if the ring road affect the historic Ipum Pat,” he said.

According to the present map of the ring road, many properties including many residential areas will be affected. Khurai Konsam Leikai, Khurai Heikru Makhong, Khurai Khomidok and Khurai Laishram leikai will be affected, Naobi said.

If the ring road is diverted beside 7th Manipur Rifles then the structure of the ring road would be more beautiful. The government has been taking up various measures to conserve water bodies related to the history of Manipur. If the government is taking such step then why the government is planning construction of ring road that will affect the historic Ipum Pat. This will also affect one huge community pond, he added.

He said, the local MLA had assured earlier that he will beautify the historic Ipum Pat so that traditional boat race can be organised like the boat race organised at Sagolband Thanga Pat and Wangkhei Thanga Pat.
