Narcotics, timber smuggling foiled

Imphal: In two separate operations, Keithelmanbi Battalion of Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR (South) foiled narcotics and timber smuggling in Ukhrul and Thoubal district on Friday and Wednesday respectively.
Based on specific input, troops of Assam Rifles along with Manipur Police launched search operation and recovered 40 kg of opium and 16 gunny bags of poppy seeds from four drug peddlers in Sogphel village, Ukhrul district. The seized narcotic were assessed to be worth approximately of Rs 3 crore, the Assam Rifles said on Saturday.
In another operation, troops of Assam Rifles intercepted four trucks carrying illegal timber in Chandrakhong, Thoubal district and recovered timber of worth Rs 2.42 lakh, the paramilitary force said.
The recovered items along with smugglers were handed over to Forest department and Litan Police station for further investigation, it added.
