Biren assures to deliver justice to Nanao’s family


Imphal: Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh has assured the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed against the death of Arambam Nanao of Sagolband Kangabam Leikai, Imphal West.

Nanao was allegedly picked up by a police team from his locality in Imphal West on Monday around 9 am. Nanao died at RIMS Hospital after he was released the same day. His family alleged that police torture led to his death.

Biren made the assurance during a meeting with the JAC representatives at the chief minister’s office, here on Thursday.

“Had a meeting with the JAC against the death of Arambam Nanao at my office today. I’m deeply saddened by the loss of life in this unfortunate incident. I assure that we will get to the bottom of this case and deliver justice at earliest,” Biren said on his Facebook post.

He assured every possible assistance for the bereaved family.

The JAC,  on Wednesday, submitted a memorandum to the chief minister demanding to initiate a judicial inquiry against sub-inspector Jitendro and others who were allegedly involved in the death of Nanao. Among others the JAC also demanded the government to provide a government job to the wife of the deceased who has three children.

It said the JAC and the victim’s family will not accept the body if the government fails to fulfil the demands.

The sub-inspector who led the police team apprehending Nanao has been suspended.
