Imphal: People of Manipur paid tribute to patriot Pukhrambam Kajao (Phingang) on his 131st death anniversary on Wednesday at the Pukhrambam Kajao Memorial Compound, Kamong Meisnam Leikai, Imphal West.
Pukhrambam Kajao was hanged till death by the British on May 25, 1891.
Martial arts events including Thang-Ta were presented as a part of the observation.y observation was organised by the Pukhrambam Kajao Memorial Trust.
Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Th. Satyabrata Singh said the present generation need to follow the footsteps of our ancestral brave heroes. Their heroic deeds and sacrifice for the future should be uphold and honored. Pukhrambam Kajao was also one of the great heroes of those days which will ever be remembered by the generations to come. “We should show gratitude to our heroes who sacrificed their life for us.”
Health and IPR minister Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh said, “We all should be having the attitude to narrate the history of Manipur to the outsiders. There are many outsiders who are eager to know our history. The landmark renaming of Mount Harriet in Andaman and Nicobar Islands as Mount Manipur is a true example of recognizing our history and our brave heroes.”
The spear which was used by Pukrambam Kajao has become a historical spear and preservation and display of it, is very much important, he said.
The minister invited suggestions and comments on how to preserve the spear in a better and beautiful way. The government will also take up necessary steps and the matter will also be consulted to the chief minister of Manipur, he added.
