DESAM locks Education (U) office over teachers, staff shortage

Imphal: Demanding to fill up vacant posts of regular principals for 24 colleges and six aided colleges including to fill up 440 vacant posts of assistant professor Democratic Studetnts’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) on Thursday locked Manipur’s department of education (university).

The student body demonstrated in front of the department’s gate before it locked the gate.

DESAM president Leishangthem Lamyanba Meeitei told reporters on the sideline of the protest conducted in front of the department of education at Keishampat that the student body has been demanding to fill up vacant posts under the department.

Librarian of 20 colleges and more than 1,000 non-teaching staff of various colleges are still vacant, he added.

In continuation of the demand, the student body members took up the protest.

Implementation of the coming National Education Policy, 2020 will not be effective if the vacant post are not fulfilled in time. Intensive agitation will be followed if the government fails to fulfil the demands immediately, the student leader said.

A team of Manipur police broke the lock later.

Meanwhile, a press release issued by deputy secretary (higher and technical education), Laishram Dolie Devi on Thursday said steps have been taken up as a way forward to the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 to fill up various vacancies in the department including recruitment of 450 assistant professors for different subjects.
