African Swine Fever in Manipur’s Kakching


Imphal: With the confirmation of positive cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Pigs in the Pig Breeding Farm, Hiyanglam, Kakching district in Manipur and in view of the impending threat of the disease the district deputy commissioner has issued containment measures to prevent spread of the disease in the area.

The Kakching district deputy commissioner Somorjit Salam in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 6 of “The Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animal Act, 2009” on Friday notified with immediate effect as “Control areas” for ASF at the Hiyanglam pig breeding farm.

The deputy commissioner, under Section 17 of “The Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animal Act, 2009” declared containment measures in the geographical areas mentioned above with immediate effect.

Accordingly, no pig shall be moved from the place where it is kept within the controlled area.  Sale of pig, pork, feed and related items is banned.

The area falling within 1 Km from the epicenter of the disease was declared as “Infected Zone” and areas falling within 9 km radius from the epicenter is hereby declared as “Surveillance Zone” for taking up control and containment procedures.

Any person, institution or organisation found violating any of these containment measures shall be deemed to have committed an offence punishable under the Act, the deputy commissioner warned.
