Tupul landslide death toll rises to 42

Imphal: Death toll of the massive landslide that occurred on intervening of Wednesday and Thursday at Tupul Yard Railway construction camp has risen to 42 while 20 went missing till Sunday.

The victims belonged to 107TA COB (B-Coy) (43), Venkata Sai Constructions (23), Railways (3), Bharat Infra Pvt Ltd (3), NIPL Infra Projects (1)villagers (5), civil driver (TA)(1) and civil cook (BIPL) (1).

Twenty-seven of deceased persons belonged to 107TA COB (B-Coy), eight belonged to Venkata Sai Constructions, three belonged to Bharat Infra Pvt Ltd, one belonged to NIPL Infra Projects, one civil driver (TA) and one civil cook (BIPL).

Three of the 107TA COB (B-Coy), 10 of Venkata Sai Constructions, two of Railways, five villagers were still missing.

Thirteen of the injured (rescued) belonged to 107TA COB (B-Coy) and five belonged to Venkata Sai Constructions.

Deputy commissioner of Noney district Haulianlal Guite released the Maranging landslide victims list.

“Of 80 confirmed victims, 42 bodies are recovered, 18 bodies are injured, 20 bodies are still missing. Body identification has become increasingly difficult due to tissue deterioration. Finding missing bodies is also increasingly difficult as our ability to trace them decreases with depth,” the deputy commissioner said.

A total of 793 personnel have been deployed. Forty-four excavators have been utilised in the rescue mission.
