3,480 teachers staged mass agitation on Teachers’ Day, suspend agitation


Imphal: Teachers under the umbrella of All Integrated Teachers’ Association Manipur (AITAM) on Monday staged mass rally at directorate of education (school), Lamphel, Imphal demanding their ‘legitimate’ rights over salary account head and service security issues instead of celebrating Teachers’ Day.

A strength of 3,480 teachers has been continuing various forms of agitations including mass casual leave, sit-in rally in front of respective ZEO offices since September 31.

The teachers had been demanding not to change their salary head of account.

In a press conference held on Sunday, education minister expressed his statement which failed to ‘understand’ their demand.

Decrying the statement of education minister the teachers took up mass demonstration on the campus of directorate of education (S).

A protesting teacher P. Silaramani said the teachers condemn the statement of education minister for using the word ‘Samagrah’ against 3,480 teachers. She said the teachers were integrated and absorbed as state government teachers. After the integration to the department the teachers are no longer under any centrally sponsored scheme (CSS) partly nor fully.

The teachers will never accept that the present monthly salary of 3,480 teachers are giving partly from the central fund, she added.

She appealed the state government to withdraw the word ‘Samagrah’ and to issue the monthly salary from the same salary head of account as that of state government teachers.

She said the agitation on Teachers’ Day does not meant dishonour Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

“The 3,480 teachers still honour the day, and like other state government teachers who are celebrating the day peacefully we also wanted to celebrate the day as it is one of the most important day for the teachers but priority was to demand for the legitimate rights”, Silaramani said.

Later, executive members of the association met director of education (S). He expressed the AITAM representatives that he acknowledge the sentiments of the teachers.  He assured them that he will approach and convince the finance department regarding the change of salary and allowances head for integrated teachers.

Honouring his assurance the association has decided to suspend the ongoing agitation for few days.
