Imphal: A scribe was physically assaulted by alleged drug peddler supporters at Hatta Golapati Maning Leikai, Imphal East on Friday night while covering a drive conducted by state Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) and Youth Athletic Development Association (YADA) in support of ‘War on drugs’.
The scribe of a local vernacular daily named as Wahengbam Johnson was physically assaulted by the alleged drug peddler supporters despite he identified himself as a journalist.
In continuation of the drive conducted by BJYM and YADA in support of ‘War on Drugs 2.0’ the joint team at around 10 pm on Thursday conducted a drive at three residence located at Hatta Golapati Maning Leikai in suspicion of presence of drug peddlers.
To defend the drug peddlers, some of the miscreants suspected to be drug peddler supporters raise a mob. The mob pelted stones and also fire several rounds to disperse the volunteers of BJYM and YADA.
A team of reporters rushed to the spot to cover the incident. While covering the incident the scribe (Johnson) was nabbed by some miscreants.
“When I was nabbed they ask me that whether I am also with them. As precautionary measures I wear my ‘Press’ jacket issued by All Manipur Working Journalist Union (AMWJU) and I identified myself as media and I come here to cover the incident. Instead of listening my identity the miscreants started assaulting with sticks and bare hands,” Johnson said.
Some of the volunteers of BJYM along with some escort of state BJYM president, M. Barish Sharma rushed immediately and rescued him.
Johnson received injury at his left hand, back and head. He was immediately rush to JNIMS hospital for first aid. He was discharged.
The drive was continued by the team along with a team of Imphal East commando. Two drug peddlers were apprehended along with illicit drugs.
The were identified as one Bogimayum Nazir Khan, 24, and Bogimayum Abbas Khan, 22, both son of Md Wali Khan.
Soap caps used in packing Heroin powder, some plastic vail containing heroin powder and number of Alzolam tablets were seized from their possession.
The apprehended drug peddlers along with the seizures were handed over to Porompat police station for further legal action.
A case has been registered at Porompat police station for assaulting the media person.
Social worker, Nongthombam Rajendro appealed the state government to take necessary action against those miscreants involved in assaulting Johnson.
Johnson belonged to Moirang Kampu Maning Leika.
Assaulting a reporter while covering an event should be avoided. With the help of media people are getting the daily news, Rajendro said. He strongly condemned the assault.
He appealed the local club organisations to be more vigil in order to root out drugs for a drug free society.
Rajendro handed over financial assistance to Johnson for his treatment.
