AMSU advisor arrested with arms as active UG member

Imphal: “If you are a students’ organisation, be a students’ organisation do not involve with anti-national elements or insurgents,” ADGP (L/O) Clay Khongsai said on Sunday.

Involvement of underground outfit in students’ organisation should be avoided as it could defame a student’s organisation, Clay said.

The senior police officer said this during a media briefing on arrest of an active cadre of a valley based proscribed underground outfit who happened to be an advisor of All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) and convenor of Advisory Committee of AMSU head quarter.

The alleged insurgent was identified as Thokchom Suresh alias Tombi alias Parihanba, 39, son of Th. Kumar Singh of Khurai Kongpal Sajor Leikai, Imphal East.

Clay addressing the media at the conference hall of superintendent of police, Imphal West on Sunday state that acting on an information of presence of some active cadres of a valley based proscribed underground outfit at Khurai Kongpal area, a team of district commando Imphal West conducted operation in the said area at around 4.50 am on Saturday.

During the operation one person (Th. Suresh) was detained. One 0.38 pistol along with one magazine was seized from the possession of Suresh, he added.

As per disclosure from Suresh, he join the outfit in 1997 and got his basic military training at Eastern Nagaland and was allotted MPA number 607 of 13th batch. He is presently working under the command of one major Umakanta of the same outfit from Singjamei who is presently staying at Myanmar since 2021, the officer said.

Suresh disclosed that presently he is working as advisor of AMSU and as convenor of advisory committee of AMSU (HQ). One laptop was also seized from his possession which was handed over to him by his commander through an unknown person at Moreh (Indo-Myanmar border town) when he went to attend AMSU Foundation Day on August 28 at Eastern Shine School, Moreh, he added.

Suresh was arrested and he was handed over to Porompat Police station along with the seizures for further investigation, Clay said.

He said thorough investigation will be conducted. If necessary the case will be handed over to central agency.
