Nupi Samaj says No to liquor legalisation, presses CM Biren to immediately withdraw Cabinet decision


Imphal: Chief minister N. Biren Singh should not invite another ‘une 18’ incident in his term, the government should withdraw the state Cabinet decision on legalisation of liquors immediately, president of All Manipur Women’s Social Reformation and Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj), Th. Ramani said on Thursday

The women’s leader was speaking to reporters at Nupi Samaj office, Lamphel.

She said Nupi Samaj strongly condemns the state Cabinet decision taken on legalisation of liquor in Manipur. The organisation has been working since decades against legalisation of liquor and to ban liquors from Manipur. Nupi Samaj will not remain silent on the decision, she added.

She said with the consumption of liquors many women have become widow, various crimes were committed and issues of immorality amid family members come to light in the society.

Nupi Samaj will not accept liquor legalisation in the state for collecting mere revenue for the state. The decision was taken with vested interest of some ministers, Ramani said.

What is the use of liquor legalisation when it would increase Widow population and crimes? She asked.

Biren was supported by the public to become chief minister of Manipur thinking that he will bring welfare for the women, mothers and the society. He should not invite another ‘June 18’ in his term”, Ramani warned.
