Manipur recalls 1st sitting of Manipur Assembly

Imphal: Recalling the 1st sitting of Manipur Assembly session as a democratic country among the South East Asian countries, the 4th foundation day celebration of the Manipur Legislative Assembly Museum and Archives was conducted at Old Manipur Legislative Assembly building, Imphal West on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, RD and PR minister Y. Khemchand Singh said Manipur before the pre merger to India, a Constitution was adopted on October 10, 1948 before Indian Constitution was adopted. On October 18, 1948 a gazette notification was issued by Maharaja Budhachandra as 1st sitting and the then Maharaja introduced Manipur State Constitution Act, 1947 on October 18, 1948.

He said the people of Manipur should be proud of the day as October 18 is day where 1st sitting of Manipur Assembly was held.

Khemchand said at the Parliament there is a museum and archives which have many historic items related to Indian democracy. Likewise, more historic items need to be kept at Manipur Legislative Assembly Museum and Archives. He opined that for maintenance of the historic items kept in the museum the Manipur government need to initiated necessary steps including sanctioning of separate budget for the museum.

Manipur Legislative Assembly secretary Karam Meghajit Singh said in the next year’s anniversary, Manipur Legislative Assembly will be organising as platinum jubilee and will be observing for 5-6 days.

He appealed the government to construct a Manipur Legislative Assembly guest house at Moreh town. For feasibility of women staff of Manipur Legislative Assembly a crèche centre will be installed at Manipur Legislative Assembly, he said.

As a part of the function a souvenir, list of elected/nominated members from Pre-Merger to 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly (1948-2022) was released.
