Gold found in smuggler’s body at Imphal airport


Imphal: Anti-Smuggling Unit, Customs Division, Imphal has arrested a gold smuggler who was trying to ferry gold by air concealing it inside his body.

The smuggler was identified as Md Abir Khan, 38, son of Md Majahar, resident of Keirao Makting Menjor Ingkhol, Keirao Bitra Ssb-division, Imphal East, Manipur.

A team of the Imphal custums division led by its superintendent recovered four ‘oval shaped packets of gold in paste form weighing 1. 243 kg from his rectum’ after he was detained at Imphal International Airport based on a ‘specific information’.

The passenger was intercepted in the departure hall of the airport while boarding Air India Flight No. AI890 scheduled to be departed from Imphal at 2: 20 pm on Thursday.

The value of the gold was estimated at Rs. 57,73,686, said a press statement released on Friday by Keerthishri, deputy commissioner, Customs Division, Imphal.

A case has been booked and Md Abir Khan was arrested under Section 104 of Customs Act,1 962. Further investigation in respect of the above case is still going on, it said.
