Leaders, organisations oppose indefinite economic blockade

Imphal: Various Manipur organisations have expressed that they will not endorse the indefinite economic blockade called by the All Manipur Tribals Development Grievances Forum (AMTDGF) that was scheduled to begin on Thursday midnight.

A press release by  Athon Reamei, chairman Khoupum Area Villages Authority Council (KAVAC); Gaiphun Kamei, chairman Nungba Area Villages Authority Association (NAVAA); Luduanthopou Kamei, chairman Khoupum Village Authority (V/A); Nampiupou Gangmei, chairman Kaiphundai Village Authority; and D. Khuidilung, Khunbu/Chief Longmai Village said the authority concerned and general public that the authorities/CSOs of Noney and Tamenglong districts do not endorse the indefinite economic blockade called by the AMTDGF as there is no proper consultation with the village authorities/CSOs concerned.

“We appeal to all the general public, Trucks, Transporters Association and CSOs that there is no economic blockade in our jurisdiction. Any untoward incident will be a responsibility of AMTDGF, and also advise the AMIDGF not to create any problems along the National Highway 37,” the joint press release said.

The office of the Nungba Youth and Students’ Organization made its clarification in connection to the indefinite economic blockade called by AMTDGF from midnight of November 3 that it mentioned “Students Leader (Nungba)”. “Whereas, the Students’ & Youth leader of Nungba has completely no knowledge of the existence of the said organization nor were we consulted either about their movement.”

The president Nungba Youth Organization cautioned any organization/individual to refrain from unnecessarily dragging the name of Nungba HQ and its tall leaders without prior consultation in the future.

“This served as a clarification on behalf of the Students and Youth of Nungba on the said indefinite economic blockade. Therefore, the said indefinite economic bandh remains ineffective,” he said.

Thadou Inpi rubbished AMTDGF’s claims and denounced the indefinite blockade. It said the Thadou Inpi-GHQ is perturbed by the news of Indefinite Economic Blockade along Highway No. 2 (Dimapur to Imphal) and Highway No. 37 (Jiribam to Imphal) declared by one AMTDGF, having its Head Office in Imphal, Manipur.

Pertaining to the claim made by AMTDGF over pending/non-release MGNREGS funds, the state government had promptly acted on October 10 and released a sum of Rs 100 crore meant for the 16 districts of Manipur on the very same day, respective of Hill and Valley. The state government in its press release on Wednesday acknowledged the problems faced by the job card holders of the state and assured to release another sum of Rs 150 crore very soon and the remaining funds to be released In due course, it said.

The state government also clarified that job card holders are not only from hill/tribal people, but beneficiaries of communities of the state and therefore any form of allegations, citing misappropriation of funds meant for the tribal by the government are baseless and unfounded. “These false propaganda and misleading information should be slopped immediately by all concerned as it will only create chaos and confusion to the public,” said.James Haokip, secretary-General Thadou Inpi-GHQ in a press release.

“Reposing our faith in the Biren 2.0 Manipur government, Thadou Inpi-GHQ would also like to appeal the state government for the early release of all pending MGNREGS funds and informs all concerned that it didn’t endorse the indefinite blockade declared by the so called AMTDGF and request everyone to not participate/volunteer in the proposed blockade/bandh,” he added.

Thadou Inpi-GHQ will not bear the cost if anyone is found endorsing the blockade/bandh in Thadou dominated areas, he said.

Chief of K. Lhangnom Village, Thangkholet Chongloi in a statement said, “This is to inform and clarify to the general public that I Shri Thangkholet Chongloi Chief of K. Lhangnom Village name was put as an in-charge of Saitu Block for the propose Indefinite Economic Blockade call by All Manipur Tribal Development Grievances Forum without the knowledge and proper consulting me. So, therefore I request the forum/organization to delete my name in public interest.”
