MNPF cadre involved in Khongtal and Behiang ambush nabbed

Imphal: A combined team of district commando, Imphal East, NIA team and 4 Assam Rifles arrested an active cadre of Manipur Naga Peoples’ Front (MNPF), an underground outfit who was involved in Khongtal, Chandel ambush and Behiang ambush from Yaingangpokpi junction, Imphal East near an oil pump at around 10.30 am on Saturday.

The arrested person was identified as one Machukring Zamshim Shimray alias Ningkhan, 20, son of late Yangmi Zamshim Shimray of New-Cannan Village, Ukhrul district.

Police said, acting on an information and the requisition of NIA, Imphal team, the combined team conducted a counter insurgency operation at Yaingangpokpi bazaar, Imphal East.

During the activity, Machukring was arrested. On questioning he disclosed that he joined the outfit in 2016 through one Robert of MNPF and got basic military training for three months under army number 159 at Thumol, Myanmar, police said.

Machukring is presently holding the rank of self style Corporal and working under the command of one self style chairman, Francis of the same outfit, it added.

He disclosed the police that he was involved in several ambush to central security forces mainly to Assam Rifles.

According to police, he was also involved in Khongtal, Chandel ambush conducted on July 29, 2020 wherein three were killed and and six were injured. The arrestee also involved in the ambush to a convoy of 46 Assam Rifles conducted on November 13, 2021 at S Sehken village, Singhat sub-division, Churachandpur district resulting killing of five Assam Rifles personnel including one commanding officer and his family members.

The arrested person has been handed over to NIA, Imphal team for further necessary legal action, police said.
