Prisoner fails to escape

Imphal: A prisoner who was brought from Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa, Imphal East for medical treatment has failed in his attempt to escape from police.

The inmate was Ningthoukhongjam Gandharaj Singh, 21, of Kumbi, Bishnupur district.

He was brought to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal East for treatment after he tried to hang himself at a cell of the Sajiwa jail on Tuesday morning.

He, reportedly, broke free from the police custody at the moment he was about to give treatment at the hospital, which is close to the police complex. However, he fell in police hands at the superintendent of police (SP), Imphal East office complex.

The police team cordoned the area and conducted search operation after he fled from the hospital. He was found hiding at the campus of SP, Imphal East on a water storage tank.

The reporters who went to the office of the SP, Imphal East to take reports of the incident were stopped at the gate.

Inspector general of police (Zone-I), Themthing Ngasava and deputy inspector ieneral of police (Range-I), K Kabib were seen coming out from the office campus.

The prisoner was reportedly taken back to the jail.
