Hit and run driver arrested

Imphal: A team of Porompat Police station on Wednesday arrested the driver of the vehicle that knocked down three pedestrians to death at Khurai Chaithabi near Shaibo hospital, Imphal East on Tuesday night.

The vehicle came from Sajiwa side at around 10:30 pm and speeded away after hitting the pedestrians.

The police received the information at 11.10 pm registered a suo motto case at Porompat Police station.

Immediately on getting the information, the police team of Porompat rushed to the spot and checked the CCTV video  footages installed along the road of Khurai areas, Khuman lampak, and other suspected locations including Imphal West areas to identify the unknown vehicle. After a hectic effects, the vehicle has been identified on Wednesday as Tata Telcoline bearing registration number UP 32 DN 2031 and the driver was also identified as  S.Sopei, 37, s/o WS Ningwon of Ukhrul Tuinem, a police report said.

It is found that the accused was hiding himself to evade police arrest and he started dismantling his vehicle to screen and destroy the evidence at a workshop at Ayangpali area. By hectic efforts the driver could be arrested and recovered  the vehicle by police team led by ASI Akhtar Hussain, the report said.

Section 201IPC is also added for causing disappearance of evidence and screen offender, it added.
