Manipur Indigenous Wrestling Championship 2022 begins at Senapati

Imphal: As part of the Manipur Sangai Festival, the Manipur State Indigenous Wrestling Championship 2022 began on Wednesday at Senapati Mini Stadium.

The championship was organised by Senapati District Wrestling Association Manipur (SDWAM) and hosted by Makhrelui village.

The opening ceremony began with a blessing from K.N. Namba, chief of Maram Khullen.

Minister L. Susindro Meitei, said Sangai festival which was celebrated in the Imphal area has now became a state wide celebration with the collaboration of various events like today’s state indigenous wrestling and others. Looking toward the tourism promotion and smooth running of the governance in the state he appealed the civil society organisation to work together hand in hand with the government. He also wished all the participants of wrestling to play with full discipline.

MLA Thangjam Arun Kumar, who is also president of Mukna Association said the indigenous games of wrestling is very popular in the state since time immemorial in both the hill and valley areas. The indigenous wrestling is helpful for building physique of an individual in participating like Judo and international wrestling though there are some differences in techniques.  He looks for bigger participants and more championships at the state level.

A total of 60 persons will be participated in the events out of which two categories of above and below 65 kg will be played till 26th of this month.

The programme was attended by various civil society organisations, village chairmen and secretaries, former wrestling champions from district among the others.
